This is Spinal Tap Special Edition Movie
The special edition dvd movie "This is Spinal Tap" ought to be included on any list of must-have dvd movies, if only for the bonus material that is included on the disc.
The film is a parody, "mockumentary" of a fictional rock and roll band called "Spinal Tap", captured at that moment in their lives as performers when they are on the excruciating and long way down from a fleeting career high.
The film's main characters are Michael McKean as shaggy blonde lead singer David St. Hubbins and Christopher Guest as his vocal sidekick and on-again/off-again band mate, Nigel Tufnel.
Harry Schearer adds an eccentric touch playing Derek Smalls, notable for his walrus style of mustache and the improbable bulge in his spandex trousers. The band goes through more than their share of drummers, each of whom meets with a uniquely bizarre demise.
Rob Reiner plays documentarian Marti DiBergi, who films the band's hijinx with deadpan fashion, while appearing to be more in on the joke than the band members themselves. Tony Hendra plays heavy-handed band manager Ian Faith, who treats the boys like.... well, boys.
As the band nosedives, so does his career as manager and captain of the sinking ship. June Chadwick fills out the cast as the Yoko Ono-ish Jeanine Pettibone, David's love interest and a divisive force in the life of the band as she tries to increase her influence over David. The dvd movie includes performances of some of the tongue-in-cheek hits that the band recorded, double-entendre laden titles like "Big Bottom", "Hell Hole" and "Lick My Love Pump".
Earlier hits for the band are among the dvd's extras, including the hippie-influenced "Listen to What the Flower People Say". The bonus material on the dvd takes you deeper into the history of the band's origins, contributing to the documentary flavor. The extra footage included in the bonus material consists of over an hour of deleted scenes which more than justify viewing for their sheer hilarity and genious.
I dare you to watch this dvd movie and keep a straight face. Of all the
buy dvd you might purchase, this one justifies repeated viewings. |
